My Latest Podcast: Review of Creed, Kobe Bryant Retirement, and More

bingesportscastMy latest podcast is ready to go at Binge Media and for this week’s episode of the Binge SportsCast, I’m joined by Binge Movie Aftertaste host, Garrett Collins. Garrett doesn’t pretend to be the biggest sports guy in the world, but after our three-episode series on the Rocky franchise (you can get the links by going to the Podcasts page), I decided to have him on my show to finish up our talk as we give a full review of the latest installment in the series, Creed. THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS SHOW!!! If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I urge you not to listen until you do. We start talking about it around the 34:00 mark, so consider yourself warned.

However, before we get to the flick, I do actually talk some sports, seeing as it’s a sports show and all, by talking about the story that hit me the most this week, that being the announcement that Kobe Bryant is retiring. I’ve got a lot to say on that, but I also hit on the remarkable 19-0 start by the Golden State Warriors. Just before getting to the review, I also comment on the Fury-Klitschko fight that took place over the weekend and give some quick thoughts on the heavyweight division and what needs to happen. This was a fun show and I certainly hope you get the chance to get around to it. Enjoy.

My Response to Michael Wilbon’s Rant Against Bloggers

If you know me, and I think a lot of you do by now, you know that I’m normally not one for confrontation in my writing. There’s a reason why I don’t write a lot of political pieces and I tend to stay neutral on a lot of controversial topics. I like to entertain when I can. I write a lot on sports because it’s something I enjoy, so when I hear somebody like ESPN’s Michael Wilbon say the things he said recently about people like me, I wasn’t going to just let it go. After clearing it with my editor at Sports Mockery, one of the many websites I write on sports for, I wrote my response and I personally invite you to check it out. I will warn you that it’s a little lengthy, but believe me, it needed to be. I’ve got your “mother’s basement” right here, Mike.

Michael Wilbon Wants To Call Out Bloggers? Here I Am

Dear Ashlyn & Brooklyn

girlscominghome

Dear Ashlyn and Brooklyn,

I know you’ll never remember taking this picture, but I will. You see, it was five years ago today that you came home from the hospital after spending the first 44 days of your lives in the NICU. I thought about writing you this letter on your 5th birthday, but with all of the hoopla that surrounded that, I thought I’d wait until now, because to me, this day is nearly as special. This day was the day that real life began.

Those 44 days were some of the hardest days of my life, and trust me when I tell you that I’ve had some others that I’ll tell you about when you get older. The hardest part every single one of those days was leaving you. I’d wake up every single morning just wishing you were in this house and wishing that that day was the day you were coming home, and although I may not have let your mom or anybody else see it, I would cry every day that you weren’t here. But then we got the good news that you were coming home and were coming home together. It’s actually quite rare that twins get to leave the hospital on the same day. But you two were bound and determined not to pass your tests until the other one could as well, and you both decided that November 20, 2010 was the day. That picture you see above was taken right before we left, and that day was so unbelievably special.

girlscominghome2

The problem I’m running into now is that I have to relive those days on a constant basis. Listen, I know you don’t understand what happened between me and Mommy. Don’t worry. A lot of people don’t. What I can tell you is that it had absolutely nothing to do with the two of you, not in the slightest. Choices were made that changed all of our lives forever, and there’s nothing anyone can do to change that now. All we can do is move forward each and every day, and I am so proud of you for handling everything the way you have. I also want you to know that it’s okay to be sad sometimes. You’re starting to ask more questions these days, and that’s okay too. You’ve been asking if Daddy gets sad when you’re at Mommy’s house, and truthfully (I always want to be honest with you) the answer is yes. I know we’re not supposed to use this word, but I hate when you’re not here. All it does is remind me of those 44 days and yes, I still cry a little bit each and every day I can’t see you, even if I still don’t let people see it. It doesn’t mean that I don’t want you to have a good time when you’re with your mother. She’s a great mom, and no matter what happened, I will never say otherwise, but it’s just really hard for me. Sure, I’ve got plenty of things to keep me busy when you’re over there, but this house is more complete when you two are here. Even when I’m working and you’re in your room playing, I just love knowing that you’re only a few feet away from me and I can just get up and hug and kiss you whenever I feel like it.

Thanks for calling me last night before bedtime. I love knowing that you’re thinking about me when you’re not here, and even those two minutes can brighten up my day more than maybe you’ll ever realize. You’ve given purpose to my life that I never thought was possible and driven me to do things that I never thought I was capable of. You’re growing into such wonderful young ladies that it makes my head spin sometimes on how fast it’s going. Just look at how much you’ve grown.

I know I’m rambling a little bit here, but Daddy tends to do that on occasion, especially when it comes to the two of you. The point I guess I’m trying to make is that you are the best thing to ever happen to me. I know things didn’t go as planned, which is okay. Believe me, you’ll have a lot of times in your life where that’s the case, but if handled correctly, you’ll come out even stronger because of it. It took Daddy a little while to figure that out, but I hope you know that I’m doing the best that I can when it comes to you. Sometimes, it may seem that I’m a little strict or a little overprotective, but there’s a reason for the things that I do. I know I’ll have to loosen the reigns at some point, but let’s not jump too far ahead, and if you could both just stop growing up so quickly, that would be great.

Girls, I love you. Whether you’re snuggled up next to me or miles away from me, I love you each and every second of each and every day, and that’s one thing that will never change. I suppose I should wrap this up though. You see, I woke up today with that special feeling that I get constantly, much like that feeling I got for the first time five years ago. Today’s a day that I get to pick you up and bring you home. I’ll see you soon.

Love always,

Daddy

The Rocky Retrospective Podcast Series-Part 3

Well, these podcasts keep getting longer and longer, but I think it’s because neither Garrett or I wanted this series to end, but it has…well, sort of. Today at Binge Media, the final entry in this Rocky Retrospective podcast series was released, and once again, we had an absolute blast on the show as we discussed Rocky V and Rocky Balboa. If you haven’t listened to the first two shows where we break down the first four films, head over to the Podcast page to get to the links to get caught up. Here are a few of the questions that we tackle in this edition of the Binge Movie Aftertaste.

  • What was the state of boxing at the time of both these releases?
  • How bad were Union Kane’s line deliveries?
  • What exactly did Paulie do to lose the Balboa estate?
  • Just how long was Rocky in Russia?
  • How many f’n Dukes are in Rocky V?!
  • Why is the Rocky franchise’s continuity more messed up than Friday the 13th‘s?
  • How much do we hate Larry Merchant?
  • How much do we love Duke?
  • What’s the guy from Heroes doing here, and how did he get the role of Rocky’s son in Rocky Balboa?
  • Can Stallone possibly win Best Supporting Actor for his role in Creed?
  • Where can you hear our final views on Creed?
  • Was Sage Stallone a bad case of Coppola style nepotism or did he come through as Rocky’s son?
  • What former franchise cast member eventually sued Sly?

If you’ll notice, there’s a question in there on when we’ll be talking about Creed, and you can get that answer in the show along with everything else, but since I’m such a nice guy, I’ll go ahead and post a spoiler. On my show, the Binge SportsCast, I will be bringing Garrett in on December 2nd to discuss the new movie, which he’s already seen and is already going nuts over it. I’ll be seeing it next Tuesday night, and we’ll be breaking it down soon, so stay tuned for that. Once again, I want to thank Garrett for letting me crash his show to talk about my favorite movie franchise of all time. We’ve got some plans for more shows like this coming up next spring, which we’ll be discussing after the new year, so you know I’ll be bringing updates on that as well. With all of that being said, here’s the final installment of the Rocky Retrospective. Enjoy.

The Rocky Retrospective Podcast Series-Part 2

In case you missed it last week, I’ve been taking part in a new podcast series at Binge Media, where I join Garrett Collins on his show, the Binge Movie Aftertaste, and we simply talk all things Rocky. If you’re not aware, this is my favorite movie franchise of all-time, so Garrett certainly made the right call by contacting me for this. In Part 1, which you can get HERE if you didn’t listen to it yet, we discussed Rocky and Rocky II, and it was everything I thought it could be. The original is my favorite film, so I certainly had plenty to say on that, and the sequel was certainly a great movie as well, so before getting to the second part in the series, make sure to go back and check out part one.

For part two, we get into what could be considered the “popcorn movies” of the franchise, Rocky III and Rocky IV. Here’s how Garrett broke down this podcast.

  • Why does Paulie waste a good bottle of liquor by throwing it into a cool Rocky pinball machine?
  • Why is Sly so damn handsome?
  • What the hell does Rocky say when Mickey dies?
  • Just what did Paulie do with that robot?
  • Why didn’t Rocky turn around and run after Drago says ‘I must break you?’
  • What Rocky IV moment actually got me to get up and cheer like an asshole in the theater?
  • How much of Rocky IV‘s budget was spent on the James Brown production?
  • Why was Hogan FIRED for doing Rocky III?
  • How the hell did Sly include Christ metaphors in the ultra montage heavy Rocky IV?
  • Why isn’t Rocky’s eye a concern anymore?
  • How did Dolph Lundgren scare home invaders away, without even being there?
  • Why haven’t we christened Rocky for ending Communism?

If that doesn’t draw you in, I’m not sure what will. We’re leading up to the release of Creed in a couple of weeks, so join us as we continue this awesome series. I’ve got to say that I’m having a great time with these podcasts, and we hope you enjoy listening to them as much as we did recording them. Click the link below to check out part 2.

The New Rocky Retrospective Podcast Series

If you really know me, then you probably know that I’m a HUGE fan of the Rocky movies. With the release of Creed, the spinoff starring Michael B. Jordan as the son of Apollo Creed, only a few weeks away, my Binge Media brother, Garrett Collins, decided he wanted to do a new podcast series chronicling the entire set of films, and who better to bring in than…..well, me.

If you’re not familiar with Garrett, he’s been with Binge Media for a little over a year now, and he’s one of the most knowledgeable people in the film industry, and I honestly don’t say that just because we work together on the site. For one, he’s actually in the business, but that’s not even the real point. The way he breaks down films is extraordinary, and he’s seriously one of the only reviewers that I read these days, simply because he’s one of the few out there that can write a review without giving things away. Not only does he write reviews, but he’s also the host of one of the best shows on the network, The Binge Movie Aftertaste, and he’s had some great guests on his show before; hell, he interviewed the writer of Jaws for God’s sake, so yeah, it’s not just some random show.

So when he asked me to do this series a few months ago, I immediately agreed to do it, and we’ve both been chomping at the bit to start this thing, and it’s finally here. When we were first talking about the format, he had broken it up into two shows. For part one, we would talk about the first three movies and then do the next three for part two. Simple enough, right? Well, when we started recording last week, we got through talking about the first movie before taking a break and realized that two shows wouldn’t be enough. We got into so much detail that we’ve decided to make this a three-part series, and we’ll break down two movies at a time, with this first one covering Rocky (my favorite movie of all-time) and Rocky II.

On a quick note before I give you the link to the first show, I must say how much I enjoyed doing this. Hell, I felt bad because I thought that I was talking too much and wrecking Garrett’s show, but it’s just what talking about this franchise does to me. It means so much to me on a personal level, which you’ll hear in the show, so I can’t thank Garrett enough for letting me come on and talk about this amazing franchise, and as soon as I can get past this damn flu, I can’t wait to get started on part two. But I’ll shut up now. The link below will take you to the show. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it.

This show has also been added to my podcast page here on the site, which also houses the rest of the podcasts I’ve done for Binge Media. My Gig at Sports Mockery

sm1

Over the past week, I’ve been updating both of my websites, including discussing the website I created for a local award-winning author, which you can read HERE, and adding a new podcast page to this site, which you can read about HERE, but this is a topic I’ve been meaning to get to for a while as well, and since I’m battling the flu and all of the original content I attempted to create today was absolute trash, I figured this is the perfect time to fill you in on one of my latest writing gigs.

Just short of four weeks ago, I accepted a position as a writer for a great website out of Chicago called Sports Mockery. If you’re a friend of mine on Facebook or follow the LukeNorris.net page, you’ve undoubtedly run into the work that I’ve been doing for this site in my first month. If you haven’t seen any of it yet, I invite you to join the 113,022 other people that have read my work over the past four weeks, at least that’s what the number was about an hour ago.

As you can see from the screenshot at the top of this post, Sports Mockery is Chicago-based in nature, focusing in on the Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, White Sox, and Fire. I’m working with some very talented and creative people here, and what’s great is that we all help one another. Ideas are thrown around a private chat room, we claim what we want as long as we can get it done in a timely manner, or come up with an idea we think would entertain people, and we go to work, and I must say that I’m digging it thus far. The guys that run the site have been nothing but helpful in getting me started and helping me out with the formatting, and I was a fan of the site before I started working there, so I highly recommend that if you’re into Chicago sports that you check them out at www.sportsmockery.com. You can also download their app on iTunes or for your Android devicefollow them on Twitter (@sportsmockery) and “like” the Facebook page. A lot of the articles are funny, some are shocking, and some are done in a journalistic style, which makes for a great mix of Chicago sports news and rumors, which just happens to be their tagline. See how I just slid that right in there. But seriously, I’m having a blast working with these guys so far, and I look forward to getting some more great content out there soon.

If you’re looking for my work at Sports Mockery, you can go to my personal page on the site HERE, and for all the latest updates about what I’m doing, continue to check back with this site, follow me on Twitter (@THElukenorris), “like” my page on Facebook, and check out every single piece of work I’ve ever done at LukeNorris.net. As always, I thank you for your continued support and I’ll be checking back in soon.

The Luke Norris Podcast Experience

Perhaps that title is a little misleading, as I’m not doing a specific podcast for The Luke Norris Experience, not yet anyway, but over the last six months, podcasting has become an important part of building my personal brand. About a year after I started writing for Binge Media, I had a conversation with the powers that be about doing my own show, as the Binge Sports brand had gotten a decent following. They were looking to expand their network anyway, so that’s how the Binge SportsCast came to be.

We started with a little test run, just to gauge a response, which turned out very well, and we were off and running. The Binge SportsCast officially premiered on April 22, and since its inception, it’s gotten a nice little following and will only continue to grow. So, I decided it was finally time for you to have a place to access all of the shows that I’ve done. I mean, you can access all of Binge Media’s podcasts on iTunes, but if you’re looking for my shows, I invite you to check out the new “Podcasts” page. Technically, it’s two pages, as one is dedicated to the Binge SportsCast, while the other is dedicated to the guest spots I’ve done on other shows on the network, including the “Up Close and Personal w/ Luke Norris” show that I did back in June, which was an absolutely amazing experience.

If you’re already a listener, then I appreciate it. If you haven’t checked out a show yet, give one a listen and let me know what you think. Click on the links below to give the pages a quick visit. Enjoy.

To visit the Binge SportsCast page, click HERE.

To visit the guest spots podcast page, click HERE.

For all the latest news and updates, check back here regularly, or you can always visit LukeNorris.net and/or follow me on Twitter @THElukenorris. As always, I sincerely thank you for your continued support. I hope you’re enjoying the experience.

Living The Revolution

I apologize for being away from this site for a few weeks, but honestly, things have been hectic lately, and some of that isn’t such a bad thing, but I’ll be updating you on a few more things as the week progresses, but today, I want to put the focus on a big project that’s been finished for a while, almost a month actually. Now, when I say finished, it’s not really finished, but again, that’s not such a bad thing, and I’ll explain as I go on.

When I started this freelancing thing full-time, I knew I’d be going in a lot of different directions, especially at the start. I search for the right websites and jobs to tackle, and some I love doing, some I like doing, and some I absolutely despise, and those are the ones that you don’t ever see. This is where I’m writing product descriptions and researching for other people and menial tasks that aren’t that riveting to discuss. It’s not ideal, but people pay money for that. Am I going to throw those updates on here or on my other website? No, because there’s certainly no point to doing that right now. The people that need to see it are the ones that see it, but I’m not going to waste your day with that. Most of you probably didn’t even know I was doing things like that until right now. No, it’s not overly interesting work, but I knew going into this that I’d have to do some things like that at the start until things take off for me, and things are starting to move in the right direction, but this is the reality of where I’m at right now. I’m sure some of you may think that just because I work from home and write some sports articles or some entertainment articles and things of that nature and get paid a little money for it, I must be living the dream. No, it’s not at that point yet, and it may never be, but overall, I am enjoying what I do, and as I said before, I’ll bring you some more updates as the week goes on. I didn’t even intend to write this much on that subject today, but I wanted you to be aware that I am doing some different things than what I had intended, and this particular project I took on was an absolute blast.

This website is both an experiment and “in progress.” A much published and recognized author, Cinda is pleased to have the opportunity to branch out in new directions.

As to poetry, “Planting” was included in the national PBS Special “Grow Old Along With Me” (Maryland Public Broadcasting/Leonardo’s Children), featuring Richard Kylie and Julie Harris. Her work—poetry, short stories, memoirs– has been included in many anthologies, including the more than six-million-copies-sold best seller,When I Am An Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple. Both published and unpublished work are included on the website—but much is published and credited on the Credits Page. All is finished and has often been included in juried works, public presentations, workshops, and more will be added as collections are printed and in demand.

As an author, Cinda has received awards and grants from many, including the Peoria Area Arts Council/Illinois Arts Council, Lannan Foundation, Writers Live at the Library/Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Fund, Writer’s Digest, among many others. She received her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona in Tucson, and her B.A. in English from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Now living with her husband and animal friends in Peoria, Cinda Thompson is a native of far Southern Illinois, whose ancestors immigrated from Kentucky, Tennessee, and beyond. She has taught all age groups, and worked for years in the textbook publishing industry. Cinda has held many “lesser jobs.” She came of age when becoming “a hippie” was the norm, and civil rights, as well as the war in Vietnam, wasthe biggest issue on “the table.” This was true locally and nationally.

A family history rich in coal mining, union organizing, as well as the student revolution and feminism inform Cinda’s work, as does the changing life of the family. She is interested in the lives of women and men, the power of relationships, and the spiritual journey of each individual. Cinda believes that the personal is political and vice-versa.

Namaste.

This is the “About” page for Living the Revolution, a website dedicated to the writing of Cinda Thompson. She is an extremely talented award-winning author and poet. She also happens to be my aunt.

Nearly a year ago, I helped her start her own blog, Diabetes: A Life Sentence?, which chronicles her 50+ year journey as a Type 1 diabetic. In starting this blog, she hoped to raise awareness about this terrible disease by writing on her experiences over the years. When she came to me to help her get this things started, I was happy to help out. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to create a website, and at this point, I’d only created this website, but I wanted to help. I knew she would bring some amazing insight and I wanted to be a part of it. She laid out what she wanted and soon after, type1ct.com went live. Since its inception, the site has done quite well, and I still stay involved with it, getting the new posts out when she’s ready to put out some new material.

It was a few months later that I created another website for myself, LukeNorris.net, which is my professional website that not only serves as a place where people looking for writing services can go to find out about what it is I can do for them, but it also serves as sort of a house for my body of work, my own personal cloud if you will. Every single thing I’ve ever written is on that site in the “Recent Work” section, including all of the pieces I’ve written for this site. Well, Cinda seemed to love that concept, and came to me with a new idea. She’s been writing for decades and decades, but has never really had a “web presence” as she puts it, and was looking to expand her reach, so we got to work.

Having designed a few websites now, I took a lot of time thinking about how I wanted this to look. I’ll be honest, Cinda is not a fancy person, so I wanted something simple, but I also wanted it to look elegant. This didn’t need to be flashy at all, so I tinkered around a bit, but finally ended up with the look you’ll see on the website, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I added a few pictures, and a sidebar with a little “About the Author” kind of thing, but the real content is inside. Sure, you can have a nice-looking website, but if the material isn’t there, then you have nothing. Obviously, this is where the heart of the website is. Off and on, I spent nearly a month adding the content that Cinda has spent years and years creating. From her beautiful poetry to her wonderful short stories to her powerful memoirs, we sat side by side going over each and every piece together, and it was absolutely amazing.

From a technical standpoint, this really was a lot of work. It’s not just copy and paste and you’re done. The spacing has to be just right. The look has to be just right. The font has to be just right. There’s a lot that goes into something like this, and I spent a lot of time putting this together, but she seems to be pleased with it. From a personal standpoint, it was an extremely rewarding experience. Did I get paid to do this? Of course I did. Things like this are what I do to put food on the table for my children and a roof over their head. Did she get a family discount? Of course she did. But that’s not even the point here. For one, I found that putting together something like this is just one more thing that I’ve found that I enjoy doing. We started with nothing and now there’s this amazing place to go to read some outstanding pieces of writing. Beyond even that, I got to spend time with her as we edited and published these things together. I got to read some work of hers that I didn’t even know existed until recently, and I can’t stress enough how great her writing is. By doing this, I realize that I’ve got some work to do to get on her level, but I’m so honored to know that she thought enough of me to put this project in my hands. Somebody that was featured in an anthology that sold millions of copies is asking my opinion on her work, and that kind of experience has no monetary value whatsoever. We have different styles, but at the end of the day, we are both writers, and I’m truly lucky to have her to learn from.

With all of that being said, the real point here is to go and check out the website. Once again, it’s called Living the Revolution, and you can find it at www.cindathompsonwriting.com. If you’re a real reader, then you will absolutely love what you find there. I’ve always been a big fan of poetry, and I can attest that it is fantastic. The memoirs are truly outstanding, and the short stories are written about the real things in life. As you read these things, you’ll understand what I’m talking about, and trust me, all you’ll want to do at the end of each piece is start the next one, and after a lot of time and effort, you can now do that with just a simple click.

Jordan Spieth Makes History & Everything You Need for the Final Week of the MLB Season

I had a busy Sunday night, writing articles on two of my favorite sports in the world.

This first article discusses Sunday’s PGA TOUR Championship, as Jordan Spieth became the youngest to ever win this particular tournament. Not only did he take that title, he won the FedExCup, got back to number one in the world rankings, and set some records in the process. Check out the day he had and take a look back at a season for the ages by clicking on the link below.

Jordan Spieth Claims TOUR Championship, Reclaims World Number 1, Wins FedExCup; 2014-15 PGA Tour Season Recap

As soon as I finished that up, I got right back to work to prepare for the final week of the Major League Baseball regular season. There’s only two divisions that have been decided, but even those teams can’t rest as they’re fighting for seeding. The article below contains breakdowns for every division and both wild card races, including magic numbers, schedules for each and every contender, and much more. Have a look.
